1 Writing Your Data Management Plan Writing Your Data Management Plan February 1, 2021 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm Zoom Most grant applications now require a data management plan (DMP) that describes measures that investigators will take to manage and protect research data during a project, and how they will proactively share data at the end of a project. But DMP requirements are not always easy to understand and apply to a project. This workshop will help make sense of DMPs, survey the data management plan requirements of major funders, show how to use DMPTool, and give participants a jumpstart on writing their next data management plan. Funders expect it, it’s good for your scholarly reputation, and it promotes transparency and reproducibility. But how can you share your data effectively? This workshop surveys the features of general self-service repositories, explains the requirements for data preparation, and equips participants to prepare and package their data to get the most benefit from their effort. All digital files are vulnerable to decay and loss. Sometimes a hard drive fails or a file becomes corrupted. But we can also lose files due to bad data management habits, obsolete technology, or, paradoxically, because we have too many copies and too many storage options. It is easy to overlook the digital photos, documents, and other files we create in daily life, in our personal research, and in our citizen science and historian scholarship. This workshop helps participants identify their most valuable computer files and create a plan for backup, self-curation, and preservation. Topics covered include basic and advanced features, survey design, communication, distribution, data analysis, and reporting. Intended audience includes anyone interested in using Qualtrics to create surveys or online forms. A presentation & demonstration will comprise the first 1.5-2 hours; instructors will be available for questions on individual surveys until the end of the session. Story Maps are an easy to use powerful tool for presentation of all kinds of information to a public audience. They are great for classroom projects, presentation of research information, and general outreach. This workshop will present an overview of how to use the various forms of the StoryMap application.
